Background of the Study
Health-seeking behavior refers to the actions individuals take in response to symptoms or perceived health problems. This can include seeking medical care from healthcare providers, using traditional medicine, or self-medication. Health-seeking behaviors significantly influence disease management, particularly in resource-limited settings like Gombe State, where the healthcare system faces challenges such as underfunding, limited access to healthcare facilities, and a lack of trained medical personnel (Gado & Adebayo, 2025). In such settings, health-seeking behaviors are influenced by factors like socio-economic status, cultural practices, education, and availability of healthcare services.

In Gombe State, a northeastern region of Nigeria, health-seeking behaviors vary significantly between urban and rural populations. While urban residents tend to seek formal medical care more frequently, rural residents often rely on traditional healers, herbal medicine, or avoid treatment altogether due to financial constraints or a lack of trust in modern healthcare systems (Mohammed et al., 2024). These disparities in health-seeking behavior can have profound effects on disease management and health outcomes, particularly for diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, and chronic conditions like hypertension.

Studies have shown that individuals who seek timely medical care and adhere to prescribed treatments are more likely to manage their diseases effectively and reduce the risk of complications. On the other hand, delayed treatment or non-compliance with medical advice often leads to worsened health outcomes, increased morbidity, and mortality (Ogunleye & Ajibola, 2025). This research seeks to evaluate the health-seeking behaviors of residents in Gombe State and assess how these behaviors impact the management and control of prevalent diseases.

Statement of the Problem
Health-seeking behaviors in Gombe State are shaped by a combination of factors, including cultural beliefs, education, and the accessibility of healthcare services. In rural areas, where healthcare infrastructure is limited, individuals are less likely to seek formal medical care and may turn to traditional or home remedies. This behavior poses challenges for disease management, particularly in the treatment of communicable and non-communicable diseases. Despite the importance of timely medical intervention for disease control, there is a lack of comprehensive research on the specific health-seeking behaviors in Gombe State and how they affect the management of diseases.

The absence of such research prevents health authorities from designing effective public health interventions and policies that could improve disease management and health outcomes in the state. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the health-seeking behaviors of residents in Gombe State and examine how these behaviors influence disease management and overall health outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the health-seeking behaviors of residents in Gombe State.
  2. To assess the impact of health-seeking behaviors on the management of diseases in Gombe State.
  3. To identify barriers to seeking formal healthcare in Gombe State and recommend solutions.

Research Questions

  1. What are the common health-seeking behaviors of residents in Gombe State?
  2. How do health-seeking behaviors influence disease management in Gombe State?
  3. What barriers prevent residents of Gombe State from seeking formal healthcare?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Health-seeking behaviors significantly influence the effective management of diseases in Gombe State.
  2. Residents in rural areas of Gombe State are less likely to seek formal healthcare than those in urban areas.
  3. Barriers such as cost, cultural beliefs, and lack of healthcare access prevent residents from seeking formal healthcare in Gombe State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on health-seeking behaviors in Gombe State, including both urban and rural populations. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and health records. Limitations include the potential bias in self-reported health-seeking behaviors and the availability of disease management data. The study will not explore the full range of health conditions but will focus on common diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and hypertension.

Definitions of Terms
